Lecture description
The bavarian alps are defined by forests, that are unique in many ways. These mountain forests are habitat for rare species, recreation space of great demand an provider of timber. But first of all, mountain forests have to protect people of avalanches, mudflows, falling rocks and floods. At the same time, these multifunctional forests stand for massive challenges, first of all climatechange. Using the example of the forest department Schliersee of the Bayerische Staatsforsten (Bavarian State Forests), it is shown how management of protective forests can cover all these different interests and influences at the same time. Also a way is shown, how the local community can participate in preservation of protective forests.
