AI-server power stages require inductors that withstand far higher DC bias currents than earlier designs. Yet datasheet current ratings are not always characterized under these conditions. This presentation provides a practical guide to measuring saturation current (Isat) and temperature-rise current (Irms) – two key indicators of inductor performance and reliability. It reviews inductance, Q factor, DCR, impedance and self-resonant frequency, then introduces a superimposed DC-bias method for currents of several hundred amperes. Engineers can measure inductance versus current, identify true saturation and evaluate temperature rise in VRM and TLVR applications. Real data shows how to validate datasheets and prevent failures in high-density AI power designs.
