Lecture description

Presented by Marco Ruggeri, Renesas

This talk presents a reference design platform built on Renesas bi-directional GaN (BDS) technology - a monolithic four-quadrant switch that replaces the conventional back-to-back device pair - cutting components count, board area, and BOM cost while raising reliability.  The platform spans multiple applications validated on hardware: a single-stage AC-DC matrix (DAB) OBC that removes the PFC inductor and DC-link capacitor, targeting 3.7 kW output power with greater than 97% full-load efficiency and low THD; a 3.7 kW Solid-State-Transformer stage, controlled by the RX-family MCU with scalability toward 10 kW, achieving extremely fast transient response, hence reducing EMI and BoM cost thanks to the commonly available 650V rated switches.
