Democracy needs interaction to function in the long term. Above all, interaction with people who are different from oneself has become less common in recent decades. Many places have declined or disappeared: village pubs and swimming pools, libraries and churches, clubhouses and station cafés are disappearing precisely where there is little else. But it is precisely these places that need to be strengthened in order to create what holds democracies together: trust.
