Lecture description

A smart grid substation is a key component of the grid infrastructure and is a primary factor in transforming voltage levels for transmission and performing important functions in order to maintain grid efficiency and reliability. If a failure does occur, the network must recover within a given short time. Ethernet is an attractive technology for carrying measurement values but the application does not tolerate frame loss. IEC 62439-3 clause 5 defines the High Availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR) protocol over Ethernet as a redundancy protocol for substation automation. We present measurements of CPU load, bridge delay and other key performance metrics of HSR on embedded processors
