The Internet of Things (IoT) integration poses major challenges for many companies because many complex and new communication solutions from short range wireless, LPWAN to next generation cellular (5G/5.xG /6G) technologies can be used. Its essential to systematically evaluate and decide on the suitable IoT communication solution based on business and technical needs especially for SMEs and corporates from non-IoT/ Communication background. There is also need for hands on training and experimentation environments of IoT Communication technologies, systems, and applications in higher education market.
This presentation will begin with an introduction to the challenges posed by IoT communication technologies and covering its various technological landscape such as short-range wireless, LPWAN, and next-generation cellular (5G/6G). It will then discuss into the need for unified testing requirements and methodologies for evaluating these technologies explore the systematic evaluation and selection of appropriate IoT communication solutions, emphasizing the need for unified testbed methodologies for evaluation and hands on training. Drawing the requirements and results from author’s involved industrial and academic R&D projects at Offenburg University and spin off IICT, it will cover the design and implementation of practical testbed environments for training and evaluating IoT communication technologies. The session will also highlight the integration of machine learning algorithms for network optimization, showcasing real-world use cases and the protocol-agnostic implementation of test scenarios.
The presentation will conclude with discussion on current challenges and future directions, will address the ongoing development of IoT communication testbeds and the importance of continued innovation in this field. It will highlight opportunities for collaboration between academia and industry, particularly in developing industry-relevant use cases and hands on training modules. This 30-minute presentation aims to provide a comprehensive, technical overview of IoT communication evaluation and hands on training methodologies, with a strong focus on practical applications and real-world scenarios.
