Biography

Federico Smeacetto is a Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He received an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Torino and a PhD in Materials Science and Technology from Politecnico di Torino. Following his doctorate, he was a researcher at Imperial College, London, UK; the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, UK; and AGH-UST, Krakow, PL. He leads a research group of 8+ tenure-track post-doc researchers and PhDs; he is a member of the Board of the Ph.D. School of Materials Science and Technology and chair (2013-present) of the “Advanced glass and glass-ceramics: fundamentals and applications” course. His research interests currently involve the development of required engineering solutions for designing, developing, and characterizing functional glass and ceramics as joining and coating materials for hydrogen conversion. Principal investigator of EU-funded projects and contracts mainly related to hydrogen technologies (GriNHy, NewSOC, HyP3D, 24_7 ZEN, Solstice, Ecolefins, H2Shift, H2START, DESIREE). Chair-elect of the Engineering Ceramics Division of The American Ceramic Society (2025-2026) and recently awarded the prestigious ACerS Global Ambassador. Elevated to ACerS Fellow in 2025.
