Demand for analyzing PFAS (per and polyfluorinated alkylic substances) is increasing quickly with more and more legislative restrictions being implemented. As tracking thousands of potential targets is impossible, sum parameters are used for screening purposes and for quality assurance of products.
Combustion-IC is a well developed and accepted method to assess Fluorine content in a wide variety of matrices. With the development of methods such as Adsorbable Organic Fluorine (AOF) and Extractable Organic Fluorine (EOF) there are now also possibilities to quantify PFAS alongside inorganic Fluoride by removing the Fluoride interference before measurement. In this presentation we will summarize and show examples of the latest analytical processes and demonstrate how to enable quick and reliable transfer between different steps in sample preparation, combustion and analysis utilizing Nittoseiko Analytech’s product lineup. With respect to standardization there will be an overview of DIN 38409-59 for AOF as well as EN 17813 for Total Halogens in environmental matrices and an outlook towards development of a method for EOF.
