Prof. Dr. Pieter Vermeersch
Biography
Pieter Vermeersch obtained his degrees of Medical doctor (M.D.) and Doctor in Biomedical Sciences (Ph.D.) from the University of Leuven (Belgium). After obtaining his M.D. degree in 2001, he started his clinical training in Laboratory Medicine and did a Ph.D. on the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension. He is Professor of Medicine (full) at the University of Leuven.
Since 2008 he works as a clinical pathologist at the Clinical Department of Laboratory Medicine of the University Hospitals Leuven (UZ Leuven). He is the head of special chemistry and mass spectrometry laboratory which performs testing for toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, metabolic disorders and endocrinology. His main areas of clinical expertise are metabolic disorders and cardiovascular and renal diseases. As a certified auditor for ISO15189 he regularly performs audits for BELAC, the Belgian accreditation authority.
He is the chair of European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Committee Post-Analytical phase (C-POST) and a member of the IFCC Working Group Laboratory Errors and Patient Safety (WG-LEPS) and EFLM Committee Preanalytical Phase (C-PRE).
