Prof. Dr. Margret Thorsteinsdottir
Biography
Margrét Thorsteinsdóttir is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry at the
Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Iceland, and the founder and R&D
Director of ArcticMass Ltd. She earned her PhD in 1998 from Uppsala University,
Sweden. From 2000 to 2009, she served as Managing Director of the Bioanalytical
Laboratories at deCODE Genetics in Reykjavík, gaining broad experience in developing
bioanalytical methods for quantifying clinical biomarkers in diverse biofluids. Her work
integrates analytical chemistry and chemometrics to support improved clinical
decision-making and advance personalized patient care.
Her current research focuses on profiling plasma-derived biomarkers for early detection
of BRCA-related breast cancer and developing targeted mass spectrometry–based
proteomic platforms to investigate associations between circulating proteins and
incident myocardial infarction. She leads eorts to implement clinical mass
spectrometry to support diagnostics and therapeutic drug monitoring through
collaborations with ArcticMass and Landspítali – The National University Hospital of
Iceland, emphasizing integrated multi-omics workflows for early disease detection.
Margrét is also a co-founder of Females in Mass Spectrometry (FeMS) and recently
established a mass spectrometry section within the Icelandic Chemical Society,
including a dedicated proteomics division.
