Biography

Prof. Ester S.B. Ferreira is a chemist (FCT-UNL Lisbon 1996) and the professor of Applied Natural Sciences in Conservation at the Cologne Institute for Conservation Sciences (CICS) of the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne since 2016. In between she obtained a MSc in Conservation Science at the DeMontfort University in Leicester, completed her PhD at the University of Edinburg in collaboration with the National Museums of Scotland and was a postdoc fellow at the paintings group of the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in the Netherlands. From 2006 to 2016 she led the Analytical research laboratory at the Swiss Institute for Art Research in Zürich. Ester S.B: Ferreira has a long experience in mass spectrometric and spectroscopic analysis in cultural heritage. Her research interests focus on the understanding composition, reactivity and material mobility in cultural heritage and the exploration and combination of analytical techniques in addressing those questions. This includes collaborations with large scale facilities to perform X-raytomography and neutron radiography. Mass spectrometry, using multiple instrumentation (LCMS, DEP-MS and PyGCMS), has been one of the core tools in Ferreira´s research. Ester S.B. Ferreira is a founding member of the MaSC users´group (Mass spectrometry and chromatography users’ group), has been engaged in the creation of a specialty group “Bau & Kultur” in the Promotionskolleg NRW which will allow the promotion of conservation science research doctoral projects at TH Köln and since 2023 joined the board of the AK Archäometrie und Konservierungwissenschaft of the GDCh.
