Biography

Thomas Hankemeier is full professor of Analytical BioSciences. After his BSc and MSc in Chemistry in Germany, and his PhD in Analytical Sciences at the Free University, Amsterdam, he worked from 1997-2004 at TNO, and become there a worldwide pioneer in metabolomics. In 2004 he started as full professor at the LACDR. He has developed innovative analytical tools for metabolomics-driven systems biology in personalized health strategies and high throughput and single cell mass spectrometry technologies. He developed micro/nanofluidic based sample preparation for charged molecules and nanovesicles and extracellular vesicles. He has discovered (early) for (cardio)vascular and metabolic diseases and neurological diseases. He is initiator and Scientific Director of the Netherlands Metabolomics Centre, one of the four PIs of the Netherlands X-omics Initiative (2018-2027, 40M€; www.x-omics.nl). He has developed a microfluidic 3D cell culture platform allowing to have 40 and more individual cell cultures with organotypic functionality. He is co-founder of MIMETAS (www.mimetas.com), the worldwide first organ-on-a-chip company, and EXIT071 (www.exit071.com). He is Medical Delta Professor of Translational Epidemiology at the Department of Epidemiology at Erasmus University Medical Centre. He (co)leads several national, EU and NIH programs like Moonlight, Hypermarker, Grip-on-MASH, STAYAHEAD, Gut-brain axis.
