Biography
Stefan Voorspoels is the principal investigator of the Flemish Reference Laboratory for the Environment that is located within VITO. Within that role he heads the development of new chemical characterization methods relevant for environmental legislation.
He and his team are specialised in solving complex chemical analytical issues for which the teams services are available to companies worldwide. The expertise extends from industrial and environmental compounds of interest. The research activities focus on the development and application of faster and more comprehensive analytical strategies and techniques to identify unknown chemicals compounds of health, toxicological, or high economic interest.
As a team leader, he is also responsible for defining the strategic research direction of the team, in close collaboration with the department director, team members, other business units and industrial stakeholders. He also coordinates the team’s internal and external collaborations, as well as all scientific output in form analytical and scientific reports, and research papers. He is also an internationally respected expert in the field of organic pollutants, PFAS, human biomonitoring, food and chemical safety with more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific publication and book chapters.
Since 2017 he has a chair as visiting professor at the Ghent University where he is responsible for “Analytical Chemistry” within the Department of Materials and Chemical Technology (UGhent - MaTCH).
