Dr. Carla Kirschbaum
Biography
Dr. Carla Kirschbaum is a postdoctoral research fellow in Prof. Dame Carol Robinson’s group at the University of Oxford. Her research explores protein–lipid interactions using native mass spectrometry, with a particular focus on lipid transfer proteins. She studied Chemistry at Freie Universität Berlin and at École Normale Supérieure de Paris before completing her PhD at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society under the supervision of Prof. Kevin Pagel. During her doctoral studies, she pioneered the use of gas-phase infrared spectroscopy to investigate lipid isomers and lipid fragmentation. Beyond her research, she served as spokesperson for young scientists in the German Society for Mass Spectrometry. Since 2023, Carla has been a postdoctoral research fellow at Oxford, supported by a fellowship of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. In this role, she is building on her expertise in structural lipid analysis to investigate the biological functions of lipids and their interactions with proteins using advanced native mass spectrometry workflows.
