Lecture description

Gut health refers to the overall state and functional integrity of the gastrointestinal system, a highly complex network shaped by dynamic interactions between the host, diet and the gut microbiota. Perturbations of the gut microbiome, at both compositional and metabolic functional levels, have been increasingly linked to digestive diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). Furthermore, the gut microbiome is highly responsive to gut‑based therapeutic interventions, including bariatric surgery, an effective treatment for morbid obesity. In this presentation, I will demonstrate the application of metabolomics, integrated with gut microbial profiling, to characterise metabolic alterations associated with IBD, as well as changes induced by gut‑based therapeutic interventions. Particular emphasis will be placed on host–microbial co‑metabolism, highlighting key metabolic pathways and microbially derived metabolites that reflect or mediate gut health.
