Lecture description

To identify possible drug targets often population studies are chosen to identify early disease biomarkers. To understand the biochemistry underlying these disease biomarkers, often animal models are human 2D or 3D disease models are studies. Such 3D in-vitro models allow implementation of vascularization and complex co-cultures, and the use of human cell types, resembling more human physiology.

In this presentation we will cover miniaturization of metabolomics for organ-on-chip models and the translation of epidemiological and clinical studies to organ-on-chip model systems. To study different cell types in such a 3D co-culture, or to study cell heterogeneity, analysis of individual single cells is required.

Single cell metabolomics will be discussed for 2D and 3D model systems. Live sampling of human disease models during experiments will be described. Current challenges and innovations in analytical technologies will be addressed.
