The use of cryogenic focusing is well-known in the GC field. In particular, the use of cryogenic modulation - of which band compression is a fundamental part of the process - is the most popular transfer process among comprehensive 2D GC (GC´GC) analysts. The prime benefit of cryogenic band compression consists in a considerable increase in analyte detectability.
With regard to sample preparation, in general there is an increasing tendency to avoid the use of solvent/reagentconsuming and lengthy time processes. The fact that, through cryogenic focusing, analyte bands are intra-column reconcentrated, can help in the simplification of the sample preparation process. A series of examples will be shown, within the field of GC and GC´GC food analysis, illustrating such a beneficial effect.
